Zlatin’s Lavki Complex

History

In the first quarter of the 17th century, in the Tula posad to the west of the Kremlin, behind the market square, there were two wooden churches: that of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa and the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.

In 1650 a stone Intercession (Pokrovsky) church was built to replace the two wooden ones. In 1768 lightning struck the building, damaging the vaults, and the church was dismantled to the foundations.

By 1790 the Intercession Church was erected again, but in the devastating fire of 29 June 1834 it burned down completely. By 1838 it was rebuilt with church funds and donations from the people of Tula.

Behind the church there were six shops built in 1808 facing Pyatnitskaya Street. Later they became part of merchant Zlatin’s trading arcades.

During the 1834 fire the shops “burned together with the church so badly that even the walls were almost destroyed.” In 1863 the shops were restored and four of them were leased to townspeople and merchants.

From the beginning of the 20th century the buildings gradually deteriorated; only fragments of the facade wall survived. In 2019–2020, as part of the Governor’s “Tula Embankment” project and under the Presidential decree marking the 500th anniversary of the Tula Kremlin, a large-scale restoration of Zlatin’s Lavki was carried out.

The restored complex now includes the historical shopping rows—where, as in the 19th century, “bread goods” are sold—along with a café-wine bar and an apartment hotel with historically inspired room interiors.

Although the building was recreated almost from ruins, the atmosphere is truly historical. An antique clock, the staircase with the Zlatin’s Lavki logo, photos of old Tula, collected works of Russian literary classics, and custom-made classic furniture designed especially for this hotel—all emphasize the historical significance of the complex and create a refined setting for relaxation.

One of the best locations in Tula: all attractions are nearby, peace and quiet. Excellent views of the church from the windows. Private guarded parking for cars. Spacious rooms, fresh renovation. Everything is high-quality, the staff are polite and professional, breakfasts get a solid five. The price matches the quality!

A cozy, beautiful hotel in the very center of the city on a quiet pedestrian street next to the Kremlin! Everything is perfect — location, atmosphere, beauty, cleanliness, staff, interiors. The rooms have a full kitchen, plenty of dishes and glassware, and a washing machine. Robes, slippers, snow-white towels and bed linen, comfortable pillows and cozy duvets. We stayed in a two-bedroom apartment on the second floor with a small balcony. The view is gorgeous! It is pleasant to wake up to the sound of church bells. You can order breakfast to the room or go to the restaurant. A small buffet with sparkling wine plus two dishes from the menu (a hot dish and a dessert) and coffee/tea. Everything is tasty and beautifully served.

Breakfast is perfectly organized: there is a buffet and you can additionally order items from the menu. Breakfast is served in the café on the first floor. The hotel is in the very center of Tula on a pedestrian street. There was a kitchen in the room, but we did not use it. All furniture is new. The staff did a great job as well. Convenient parking. The hotel has an elevator.

A wonderful aparthotel in the very center of Tula, on a beautiful pedestrian street, a few minutes’ walk from the Kremlin and the embankment. We stayed as a family of four in a two-bedroom suite (#6). Everything is very clean and neat, the room is huge with a large kitchen-living room, very comfortable beds, and two types of pillows with different firmness. Breakfasts in the café are very substantial: along with the buffet, they offer two dishes, a drink and a dessert from the menu. It is impossible to leave hungry, even if you or your kids are picky eaters. The staff are friendly and courteous. Highly recommend!

Friendly staff, a comfortable room, everything is there: water, chocolates, slippers, lots of different pillows, dishes, a small library. Breakfast is excellent — tasty, quick, varied, and beautiful! Right in the tourist area: shops, restaurants, museums, the Kremlin is two steps away.
